Elegant rope jewellery NOT my usual style but loving making them
As most of you already know my favourite metal to work with is copper
twisting, hammering, wire wrapping and so much more , well those who know me better also know Im an Aries never satisfied with what Im doing always wanting to learn something new !!!
Ive had a few requests for jewellery made with rope something I had never thought of making so far because well its not what Im used to doing and I feel like Im cheating not having to make all the components from scratch ...I went and bought different colours of rope ( I think its called climbers rope ) I didn't know there were so many colours to choose from .Then I had to get the end caps and different things to attach to the designs I had in mind to make ..
I couldn't wait to get started as soon as I got home I laid everything out on my work bench trying to figure out what went best where ... Measuring the rope cutting it adding the end caps then deciding on the designs to adorn the necklaces I was going to use jump rings to attach the butterflies and flowers I had decided to use but they didn't look right it made them look cheap ... after a bit of though I got out my fireline and hand sew all the components onto the rope now things started to look really nice I actually sold 2 before I even got them photographed .. the next day I went and bought more colours so I can start an autumn line too lovely browns and copper tones

This is my first finished project using blue patina ...I was really surprised how blue they really turned out!!
As I said this is my first time using the blue patina .The shop I buy my supplies from gave me 2 bottles one to clean the copper and one to turn it blue ... first of all I cut out the crescent moon shapes out of copper sheet metal then I hammered them to give some texture ... Now to try out my new patina solutions SAFETY FIRST gloves on mask on !!
I used the cleaning one first (there is no info on the bottles so I don't know the make or exactly what's in them Google blue patina I'm sure you will find plenty of makes )
I left it in the solution for a couple of mins then removed and rinsed it ... I only wanted one side to become blue so I used a small brush to apply the second solution that gives it the blue colour ,I left it on for a about 2-3 mins then took it out of the dish and placed it on tissue paper top side up ...Now the fun thing with this patina is it doesn't go blue straight away , you have to wait as it dries and mixes with the oxygen in the air it slowly starts to change first it seemed like a light green then slowly turned into this amazing blue colour .... the minute you are happy with the colour you have to seal it to stop it changing and losing its lovely colour .... I would think protectaclear would be the ideal sealant for this kind of project ... It has to be something that is ok to touch your skin ...
To set these earrings off I've added some lovely czech glass seed beads ,blue crystal beads and some copper daisy spacers ..
This sexy copper circle necklace was fun to make ....
I started by using copper wire twirled it around a mandrel so all the circles would be the same
cut them then filed the ends ... This is a must when you want to solder them together they have to be straight to get a good connection ...
Playing with my micro torch is so much fun "SAFETY FIRST " then fun ... I used it to solder all the circles together .The best part really is when I get to use my hammer yes you guessed it I hammered each circle to give them texture .Well now it's time to make the little jump rings to hold the circles together again I used the same technique as before winding the wire round a mandrel ....you can use anything even a pen or do it like me I use one side of my round nose pliers just make sure every time you are winding at the same place so they are all the same size !! Now I cut them and hammered them a bit I use my cutters make sure each side is even ,if you have flush cutters its even better most of my tools are out of my hubby's tool box no fancy things here :)
So now I have everything cut filed and hammered I started to join the circles using the jump rings I just made ..The next step was to give it a nice warm patina ..
At this stage I thought It looked a bit bare so I decided to add a few storm grey crystal pearls so I wire wrapped them into the circles that dangle down .. to finish it all off I made a lovely copper hook clasp and joined it all together with a lovely distressed red leather necklace !!
You can find this necklace in my etsy shop here is the link
I 've been learning a new technique lately called fold forming ....It's a real stress reliever ....why ?
because you have to hammer the living daylights out of a piece of metal loooool .
Well something like that ... after folding and hammering and annealing and hammering and annealing again and again until you get the desired flat fold you then have to find a way to open the metal ,this part is the most stressful for me as my hands aren't as strong as they used to be ,It's been almost a year since I had carpel tunnel surgery ... Once you manage to pry open the metal you can finish your design either by hammering it to gain texture or twisting it there are so many different things you can do here are a few of my new designs using this technique ....
Again I've been away too long from my blog .... I had a really bad case of vertigo in other words so dizzy I would fall down doctors orders was no tv and NO computer ... well I'm back now ..
I would like to show you all "A work in progress" I've been having so much fun making Big Bold copper rings I've actually named it my BOLD RING COLLECTION..
This is the story of how one of my Bold copper rings comes to life ...... Once upon a time there was a lonely piece of copper sitting on my work bench ,I took my saw and cut a long strip filed it down then decided to add a bezel .... My first try at making and attaching a bezel ,it actually turned out ok :)
The next step was to slowly shape it round a mandrel to get it looking something like a ring hammering it softly just enough to harden it and shape it without marking it ....
then I had to decide what else to do with it a little fold here and a little fold there ..then yes that's it .... Still very messy in need of a real good clean to remove the fire scale ,so time for lemon and salt so simple but so amazing in just a few seconds the copper becomes shiny like new a good rinse and dry. Now there was a small problem with the bezel the copper I used was a touch too thick to fold gently over the sides of the stone I did mention this was my first bezel ... so I cheated a bit by using a dab of E6000 and put the little faceted garnet in ,it actually helped the stone to raise a little higher so it looked much better ,I have heard other people doing it this way ...
Well then after a really good polish it looks great well that's my opinion I would love to hear yours too ,below you can comment and let me know or if you have any questions please do ask .. Lots of love and kisses HELEN ♥
